Nominated “Best Internet Application” of 2009

We just found out that Animoto was nominated by the Crunchies Awards for “Best Internet Application” of 2009! And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Animoto received a second nomination under the category of “Best Design.” Wow, awesome! What a completely amazing way to wrap up the year.

With fellow nominees like Yelp, Posterous, Dropbox and Google Chrome, we’re completely humbled. And truth be told… because we totally love those guys and bow down to them, we won’t feel too bad if we don’t win. =)

“The Crunchies, co-hosted by GigaOm, VentureBeat, and TechCrunch, is an annual competition and award ceremony that recognizes and celebrates the most compelling startups, internet and technology innovations of the year. The internet community is invited to choose who wins.”

Should you feel so inclined, vote for us. But only if you like Animoto. Not because you think we look handsome in tracksuits.

Voting ends Wed, Jan 6th. The Awards Ceremony will take place Friday, January 8th at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco.

Time for us do some laundry so we can try to look nice.

We had a total blast at the Webby Awards last night. We were presented with both the Judges’ Choice and the People’s Voice Webby awards for ‘Best Service & Application’ category. And if today’s total-body-pains are any indication, we definitely did our fair share of celebrating.

It was nice reflecting back on our many years of hard work and recognizing all that we’ve accomplished. Even more nice though was reflecting upon the many top-shelf open bars surrounding us at the venue and appreciating the fact that we were drinking something a bit classier than Brooklyn Lager for once.

It was a fun crowd. Who would have ever thought that a bunch of nerds like us would ever get to hobnob with all these famous celebrities? I guess when you’re being given an award, you’ll show up anywhere… even if it’s with Ruby on Rails programmers. Thanks for coming, celebs! Just let us know next time you’re having a LAN party and we’ll totally be there.

Amazingly enough, our table was front and center, right between the YouTube people and The New York Times. (We’re pretty sure they forgot we’re just a startup.) Seth Meyers was hilarious as host. And one of the highlights for us was definitely the performance by DJ Mike Relm spinning video based entirely on the “O-face” guy from the movie Office Space. Freakin’ genius.

We didn’t have the wittiest of 5-word acceptance speeches, but we probably at least had the loudest.

Okay, back to our lives of anonymity.

Webby Award nomination!

We just found out that Animoto has been nominated for a Webby Award in the best Web Service & Application category. Woohoo!

Apparently, the Webbies is like the Oscars of the Internet industry… except for the Red Carpet is filled with more Mark-Zuckerberg-types than Angelina-Jolie-types. Oh well. At least no one will care I got my outfit for exactly $18.37.

Other nominees we bow down to include: Mint, Kayak, Wired, Politico, Rock the Vote, The New York Times, and our friends with whom we happen to share our category, Blurb.

Like Animoto? Why not vote for us for the “People’s Voice award”! You know we’ll totally freak out if we win.

Established in 1996, the Webbys are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member body of Web experts, business figures and celebrities including musicians Beck and David Bowie, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, political columnist Arianna Huffington, Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser, “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, R/GA Founder and Chairman Robert Greenberg, Virgin Atlantic Chairman and Founder Richard Branson, and The Weinstein Company Co-Founder Harvey Weinstein.

Academy members select the nominees in each category, as well as the winners. But the online community determines the winners of a People’s Voice award by voting for their favorite nominated work in each category.

Last year’s Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries from over 60 countries and all 50 states, and generated more than 750 million media impressions worldwide.

Fans have until April 30 to vote for their favorites at the Webby People’s Voice site. Winners will be announced May 5, with the trophies handed out June 8 at an event in New York City hosted by “Saturday Night Live’s” Seth Meyers.

The 2008 Crunchie Awards

Last night at the Crunchie Awards in San Francisco, we had the opportunity to celebrate all the achievements of various companies… from the big boys of Facebook, Google, Microsoft & Amazon, to the new guys on the block like Twitter, FriendFeed, GitHub, Hulu and, well… us.

It seems kind of ridiculous to even include us in the same sentence as these guys. These are truly the heros, inspirations, and idols of the industry. But what was amazing about last night was the utter lack of ego or pretentiousness.

With people sitting around us like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels, and Google product chief Marissa Mayer, it was hard not being just wee bit giddy… you know, like we were going to pee our pants.

But there was a genuine spirit of camaraderie & community in the air, the general message being… hey, the economy may be in the crappers and times may be stressful, but there’s still much to celebrate, much to be proud of, and still much more to innovate in our futures ahead together.

Here’s are some of the highlights from the awards ceremony & after-party at City Hall:

We’re proud to say we were awarded runner-up in our category of Best Design. But we’re even more proud to have shared the category with such incredible companies like SlideRocket, FriendFeed, Infectious, LaLa… and the winner Cooliris, who are completely amazing! We’re really honored and humbled to be Crunching it up with all of you guys this year.

On to 2009! Or as we like to say, one year closer in our plans to acquire Google.

NBC’s “TechNow!” – Best Website of 2008

We heard that Animoto received “Best Website of the Year” honors from TechNow!, a half hour television show about technology seen on NBC stations in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

We also just found out that the BBC show “Click,” which airs in the UK, featured Animoto as one of their four “Year’s Top Picks” websites.

And as if that all wasn’t amazing enough, we also just read that Michael Arrington of TechCrunch included Animoto on his list of “21 websites he can’t live without in 2009“.

Wow, what a crazy way to start the New Year! Lots to live up to. No pressure. Heh.

Animoto makes PC Magazine’s Top 100 of 2008

We found out this morning that PC Magazine included Animoto in its annual selection of Top 100 Undiscovered Websites.
